In Greek mythology, Cassandra (Greek: Κασσάνδρα "she who entangles men") (also known as Alexandra) was a daughter of King Priam and Queen Hecuba of Troy whose beauty caused Apollo to grant her the gift of prophecy. Apollo loved Cassandra, and when she did not return his love, he cursed her so that her former gift would become a source of endless pain and frustration. From the play Agamemnon, it appears that she made a promise to Apollo to become his consort, but broke it, thus incurring his wrath. What is she holding in her hand? Is it an apple? An apple may symbolize the forbidden, and temptation. Or it may symbolize youth, or a gift. Perhaps it is a heart? The heart is often referred to as the soul of a human being. It is also most often known to represent love. Or is it some form of crystal ball, in which Cassandra could reveal her prophecies...? (Even though classical Greece usually used a mirror.) Or perhaps it is something different entirely. What do you think? With Cassandra being a princess, I wanted to depict her with something of great value. The pearl necklace can both be a symbol of this; and of the divine: In a Christian New Testament parable, Jesus compared the Kingdom of Heaven to a Pearl of Great Price. Additionally, the twelve gates of heaven are reportedly each made of a single pearl Revelation 21:21, that is, the Pearly Gates. Another reference is found in the Islamic Quran: "35:33 Gardens of Eternity will they enter: therein will they be adorned with bracelets of gold and pearls; and their garments there will be of silk." I decided on the very warm, red hues because to me, red symbolizes both love and wrath. Which leads us back to the initial story of Cassandra...
